Region & People
…did you know that South Tyrol has about 471,000 inhabitants? The inhabitants are split into three language groups. About 70% of the population is of German mother tongue, about 26% are of Italian mother tongue, and abut 5% of the population is part of the Ladin (Rhaeto-Romanic) language group.
South Tyrol is a truly varied region, whereby the majority of the inhabitants are employed in the service industries, in tourism or in production. The remaining population works in agriculture. South Tyrol is the most northern province in Italy and borders with Austria, Switzerland and France. South Tyrol is part of Italy. The Capital of South Tyrol is Bolzano. Other cities include Merano, Chiusa, Bressanone, Brunico, Vipiteno and Glorenza. South Tyrolean's make up 0.8% of Italy's population. There is an unemployment rate of about 2.6 %.
